I always thought Ian McKellen was up there alongside the other real British royalty: Attenborough, Stephen Fry, Judi Dench, Idris Elba etc. because of his work with Stonewall, a gay rights charity. (They were the ones who made the ‘Some people are gay. Get over it.’ posters) He actually came to my school to do a talk about it, and I think sending Gandalf around telling kids to be tolerant to LGBT issues was genius.
This episode of the BBC’s classic series was utterly heart warming. There are few things which make me both actually feel British, and feel a sense of pride in being so- and something like a good piece of British BBC television like this episode- for some reason- is one of them. Worth a watch!
